Eurovision 2025: What We Know So Far
The glitter has barely settled from Eurovision 2024, but the anticipation for Eurovision 2025 is already building! Following Nemo’s historic win for Switzerland with “The Code,” the next edition of the contest will be hosted in Switzerland.
The Host City Race Begins
While the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has officially confirmed Switzerland as the host nation, the specific city remains undecided. Several Swiss cities are vying for the honor, each presenting unique strengths. Potential candidates include:
- Zurich: Switzerland’s largest city boasts excellent infrastructure, a large international airport, and ample hotel capacity.
- Geneva: Known for its international organizations and multicultural environment, Geneva offers a sophisticated setting.
- Basel: Situated on the border with both France and Germany, Basel offers a central European location and a rich cultural scene.
- Bern: The Swiss capital offers a historic backdrop and a charming atmosphere.
- St. Gallen: Known for its Abbey of St. Gall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this city offers a unique and historical location.
The EBU, in collaboration with the Swiss broadcaster SRG SSR, will assess each city’s bid based on several factors, including venue capacity, infrastructure, security, and accommodation options. A decision is expected in the coming months.
Anticipated Dates and Format
While the exact dates are yet to be announced, Eurovision Song Contest typically takes place in May. Expect the Semi-Finals to be held on Tuesday and Thursday of Eurovision week, followed by the Grand Final on Saturday. The format will likely remain consistent with recent years, featuring two Semi-Finals leading to a Grand Final featuring the top qualifiers from each Semi-Final, plus the “Big Five” (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom) and the host country.
Early Contenders and National Selection Processes
It’s still early days, but some countries have already started hinting at their participation and potential artists. National broadcasters across Europe (and beyond) will soon be kicking off their national selection processes, ranging from open auditions to curated artist showcases. Keep an eye on your favorite participating countries to see how they plan to choose their representative for Switzerland!
What to Expect from Switzerland
Switzerland has a rich Eurovision history, having hosted the very first contest in 1956. Expectations are high for a well-organized and memorable event. We can anticipate a show that celebrates Swiss culture and innovation, while also embracing the diversity and artistry that Eurovision represents.
Stay tuned for further updates as the host city is announced, dates are confirmed, and more details emerge about Eurovision 2025! The journey to Switzerland has just begun.
