Stanley Sjöberg (1927-2016) was a highly influential and often controversial Swedish Pentecostal pastor, author, and debater. He was a central figure in the Swedish Pentecostal movement for decades, leaving a lasting mark on its theological landscape and public image.

Born into a Pentecostal family, Sjöberg felt a calling to ministry early in life. He studied at the Bethel Seminary in Stockholm and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming pastor of the prestigious Filadelfia Church in Stockholm in 1965. This appointment cemented his position as a leading voice within the movement. He remained senior pastor until 1988.

Sjöberg’s preaching style was known for its intellectual rigor and passionate delivery. He addressed complex theological issues with clarity and conviction, attracting a large and diverse congregation. He was also a prolific writer, publishing numerous books and articles on a wide range of topics, from biblical interpretation to social commentary. His writings were widely read and debated both within and outside Pentecostal circles.

Beyond his role as a pastor, Sjöberg was a prominent voice in Swedish society. He actively engaged in public debates on issues such as abortion, sexuality, and the role of religion in public life. He held conservative views on these matters, which often put him at odds with the prevailing liberal consensus in Sweden. This made him a controversial figure, admired by some for his unwavering stance and criticized by others for his perceived intolerance.

One of Sjöberg’s most significant contributions was his emphasis on the importance of biblical scholarship and theological reflection within the Pentecostal movement. He challenged the anti-intellectual tendencies that sometimes characterized the movement, urging his followers to engage critically with scripture and to develop a robust theological framework for their faith. He encouraged higher education among Pentecostals and actively participated in theological discussions with scholars from other Christian traditions.

However, his leadership was not without its critics. Some accused him of being authoritarian and resistant to change. His conservative views on social issues also sparked controversy and led to disagreements within the Filadelfia Church and the broader Pentecostal movement. In the latter years of his ministry, he faced increasing challenges to his authority and ultimately resigned as senior pastor.

Despite the controversies that surrounded him, Stanley Sjöberg remains a towering figure in the history of Swedish Pentecostalism. He was a gifted preacher, a prolific writer, and a passionate advocate for his beliefs. His intellectual depth and his willingness to engage in public debate helped to shape the Pentecostal movement in Sweden and to raise its profile in Swedish society. His legacy continues to be debated and re-evaluated, but his impact on the religious landscape of Sweden is undeniable.
