Arielle Kayabaga

Arielle Kayabaga is a Rwandan-Canadian politician currently serving as the Member of Parliament for London West in Ontario, Canada. Her journey to Parliament Hill is a testament to resilience, dedication, and a commitment to public service.

Born in Burundi amidst political instability, Kayabaga spent her early years in refugee camps. This experience deeply shaped her understanding of displacement, inequality, and the importance of advocacy for vulnerable populations. In 2005, she immigrated to Canada with her family, settling in London, Ontario.

She quickly embraced her new home and became actively involved in the community. Kayabaga pursued her education, earning a degree in Political Science from Carleton University. This academic foundation, combined with her lived experiences, fueled her desire to make a positive impact through politics.

Kayabaga’s political career began at the municipal level. In 2018, she was elected as a city councillor for Ward 13 in London, becoming the first Black woman to hold that position. During her time on city council, she championed initiatives focused on affordable housing, environmental sustainability, and community safety. She also played a key role in advocating for policies that addressed systemic racism and promoted diversity and inclusion within the city.

Her dedication to her constituents and her progressive vision earned her recognition and respect within the community. This momentum led to her successful candidacy for the Liberal Party in the 2021 federal election. Her victory in London West marked a significant milestone, as she became the first Black Member of Parliament to represent the riding.

In Parliament, Kayabaga has focused on issues such as affordable housing, climate change, and supporting newcomers to Canada. She serves on various committees, using her platform to advocate for policies that address the needs of her constituents and contribute to a more just and equitable society. She is a strong advocate for the LGBTQ2+ community and actively supports initiatives that promote social justice and equality.

Kayabaga’s personal story is a source of inspiration to many. Her journey from refugee camps to the Canadian Parliament is a powerful example of what can be achieved through hard work, determination, and a deep commitment to serving others.
