Tidjane Thiam, born July 29, 1962, is a prominent Ivorian-French businessman and political figure. While he’s primarily known for his distinguished career in the financial sector, his connection to the Parti Démocratique de Côte d’Ivoire (PDCI), one of Côte d’Ivoire’s oldest and most influential political parties, is increasingly significant. Thiam’s professional trajectory is impressive. Educated at the École Polytechnique and École des Mines in Paris, he boasts a remarkable background in engineering and business. He served as CEO of Prudential plc, a British multinational insurance company, from 2009 to 2015, a landmark achievement being the first black CEO of a FTSE 100 company. Following Prudential, he assumed the role of CEO at Credit Suisse from 2015 to 2020, steering the bank through a significant restructuring period. Despite his international business prominence, Thiam has always maintained a strong connection to Côte d’Ivoire. He briefly served in the government of Côte d’Ivoire in the late 1990s as Minister of Planning and Development under President Henri Konan Bédié, a key figure in the PDCI. This experience solidified his understanding of Ivorian politics and the challenges facing the nation.
