Aleksandar Vulin

Aleksandar Vulin is a prominent and often controversial Serbian politician known for his staunchly pro-Russia and socialist viewpoints. Born in Novi Sad in 1972, he has held several high-ranking positions in the Serbian government over the past two decades, shaping domestic policy and international relations.

Vulin’s political career began in the Yugoslav Left (JUL), a party led by Mirjana Marković, the wife of Serbian President Slobodan Milošević. This early association deeply influenced his political ideology and aligned him with socialist and nationalist principles. Following the downfall of Milošević, Vulin remained active in politics, eventually forming the Movement of Socialists.

Throughout his career, Vulin has served in various cabinet roles. He was the Minister without portfolio in charge of Kosovo from 2012 to 2013, focusing on issues related to Serbs living in the disputed territory. He then served as Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs from 2014 to 2017, overseeing significant reforms in labor laws and social welfare programs. From 2017 to 2020, he held the position of Minister of Defence, modernizing the Serbian Armed Forces and strengthening security cooperation with Russia and other countries.

His tenure as Minister of the Interior, from 2020 to 2022, was particularly noteworthy. During this period, he actively combatted organized crime and corruption. However, he also faced criticism for his strong stance on security issues and perceived close ties to Russia’s security apparatus. Notably, in 2023, the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned Vulin for alleged involvement in transnational organized crime, corruption, and drug trafficking. The sanctions also cited his alleged misuse of public office and support for malign Russian influence.

Vulin is known for his vocal support of Russia and President Vladimir Putin. He has consistently advocated for closer ties between Serbia and Russia, even in the face of international pressure and the ongoing war in Ukraine. His strong pro-Russian stance has made him a controversial figure in Serbia, which is officially seeking EU membership while simultaneously maintaining close relations with Moscow. He has publicly criticized Western policies and promoted the concept of a “Serbian World,” echoing similar rhetoric used by Russia in its foreign policy objectives. This concept, interpreted by some as a form of Serbian nationalism, aims to unite Serbs in the Balkans and beyond.

Beyond his political activities, Vulin is a published author. His writings often reflect his political ideology and address issues related to Serbian identity, history, and the country’s role in the region. He remains a significant figure in Serbian politics, even outside official government positions, continuing to shape public discourse and influence political debate.
