The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination is a standardized computer-based test for prospective undergraduates in Nigeria. It’s a pivotal step for students seeking admission into Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Passing JAMB is typically a prerequisite for admission into most tertiary institutions in the country.
The examination assesses candidates’ knowledge in four subjects: Use of English (compulsory), and three other subjects relevant to their chosen field of study. Subject choices are determined by the intended course of study. For instance, a student aspiring to study Medicine would typically take Use of English, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
JAMB’s primary objective is to ensure a fair and standardized process for selecting qualified candidates for higher education. It aims to minimize disparities in educational standards across different secondary schools and provide a uniform measure of academic preparedness. The examination attempts to level the playing field, giving students from diverse backgrounds an equal opportunity to compete for limited spaces in tertiary institutions.
Registration for JAMB is usually conducted online through the JAMB portal. Candidates are required to create profiles, purchase e-PINs (electronic Personal Identification Numbers), and select their preferred examination town and center. A key aspect of the registration process is the National Identification Number (NIN), which has become mandatory for all candidates. This initiative aims to improve the integrity of the registration process and curb impersonation.
The examination itself is conducted in a computer-based test (CBT) format. Candidates answer multiple-choice questions within a stipulated time frame. JAMB employs various measures to ensure the integrity of the examination, including biometric verification, CCTV surveillance, and the deployment of invigilators. Despite these efforts, challenges related to examination malpractice persist, and JAMB continuously strives to enhance its security measures.
After the examination, results are released online through the JAMB portal. Candidates can access their scores using their registration details. Based on their performance in JAMB, candidates become eligible to participate in the post-UTME (Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination) screening conducted by individual institutions. The post-UTME is an additional assessment used by universities to further evaluate candidates’ suitability for their programs.
JAMB scores are typically valid for one academic year. If a candidate is not offered admission in the year they take the examination, they must re-register and retake the examination in subsequent years to be considered for admission. The JAMB examination, while essential for accessing higher education in Nigeria, is a source of significant pressure for students. Preparation is key, and candidates are advised to study diligently, utilize past questions, and familiarize themselves with the CBT environment.
