Prabowo Subianto: A Profile of Indonesia’s President

Prabowo Subianto Djojohadikusumo, often simply known as Prabowo, is the current President of Indonesia, having been elected in 2024 after decades of political ambition. His journey to the highest office in the land has been marked by both controversy and unwavering determination. Understanding his background, political career, and current presidency offers insights into the direction Indonesia is taking. Born in 1951 into a prominent political family, Prabowo’s father, Soemitro Djojohadikusumo, was a respected economist who served in various cabinet positions. This privileged upbringing exposed him to the inner workings of Indonesian politics from a young age. He pursued a military career, rising through the ranks of the Indonesian Army, eventually commanding the elite special forces unit, Kopassus. His military career, however, is also the source of significant controversy. Allegations of human rights abuses during his time in command, particularly in East Timor and during the riots of 1998 leading to the fall of President Suharto, have dogged him for decades. He was honorably discharged from the military in 1998 amidst these accusations, although he has consistently denied any wrongdoing. Following his discharge, Prabowo spent time abroad before returning to Indonesia to enter the world of business and, ultimately, politics. He founded the Gerindra party (Great Indonesia Movement Party) in 2008, positioning himself as a strong nationalist and advocating for economic self-sufficiency. Prabowo contested the presidential elections in 2009, 2014, and 2019, each time challenging the incumbent president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) and Joko Widodo (Jokowi) respectively. While he gained a significant following, particularly among those seeking strong leadership and economic nationalism, he was defeated in all three attempts. His campaigns were often characterized by fiery rhetoric and a focus on national pride. Despite his losses, Prabowo remained a prominent figure in Indonesian politics. In a surprising turn of events, after the 2019 election, President Jokowi appointed him as Minister of Defense in his cabinet. This move was seen by many as an attempt to bridge political divides and bring Prabowo’s supporters into the national fold. Prabowo’s tenure as Defense Minister provided him with a platform to demonstrate his commitment to national security and to cultivate a more moderate image. He focused on modernizing the Indonesian military and strengthening international partnerships. Finally, in 2024, Prabowo secured the presidency after a campaign that emphasized continuity and national unity. His running mate, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, President Jokowi’s son, also played a significant role in his victory, attracting younger voters and signaling Jokowi’s tacit endorsement. As President, Prabowo faces numerous challenges, including navigating complex geopolitical tensions, managing Indonesia’s economic growth, and addressing issues of social inequality. His approach to governance will be closely watched, particularly given his controversial past and his nationalist leanings. How he balances his promises of continuity with his own vision for Indonesia’s future will define his legacy. His success will depend on his ability to unite a diverse nation and deliver on his promises of prosperity and security for all Indonesians.
