Nalapraya’s career began in the military, where he rose through the ranks, eventually attaining the rank of Lieutenant General. His military background instilled in him a sense of discipline and strategic thinking that he later applied to his civilian roles. However, it was his appointment as the Governor of West Java from 1985 to 1995 that cemented his legacy.

During his decade-long tenure as governor, Nalapraya spearheaded numerous development projects aimed at improving the lives of the people of West Java. He focused on infrastructure development, recognizing its importance in facilitating economic growth and improving connectivity. Under his leadership, roads, bridges, and irrigation systems were constructed and upgraded, connecting remote areas and opening up new opportunities for trade and agriculture. He understood that investing in infrastructure was crucial for attracting investment and creating jobs.

Beyond infrastructure, Nalapraya was also deeply committed to improving education and healthcare in West Java. Nalapraya’s leadership style was characterized by a pragmatic and results-oriented approach. He was known for his ability to cut through red tape and get things done. He fostered collaboration between the government, the private sector, and local communities, ensuring that development projects were aligned with the needs and aspirations of the people. He was a strong believer in regional autonomy and worked to empower local governments, giving them greater control over their own development.

Even after his governorship ended, Nalapraya remained active in public life, serving as a member of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR). He continued to advocate for policies that promoted economic development, social justice, and regional autonomy. He was widely respected for his integrity and his unwavering commitment to serving the nation.
