The NBA Playoff bracket is a single-elimination tournament that determines the NBA champion. Sixteen teams, eight from each conference (Eastern and Western), qualify for the playoffs based on their regular season records. The top six teams in each conference are guaranteed a playoff spot. The teams with the 7th through 10th highest winning percentages in each conference participate in the Play-In Tournament to determine the final two playoff seeds (7th and 8th) in each conference.
The tournament is structured as follows: Within each conference, teams are seeded 1 through 8 based on their regular season record. The 1st seed plays the 8th seed, the 2nd seed plays the 7th seed, the 3rd seed plays the 6th seed, and the 4th seed plays the 5th seed. All series are best-of-seven, meaning the first team to win four games advances to the next round. The higher seed in each matchup has home-court advantage, hosting Games 1, 2, 5 (if necessary), and 7 (if necessary).
After the first round (often called the Conference Quarterfinals), the winners advance to the Conference Semifinals. The winners of the 1-8 and 4-5 series face off, as do the winners of the 2-7 and 3-6 series. The higher seed again receives home-court advantage.
The winners of the Conference Semifinals advance to the Conference Finals. Here, the two remaining teams in each conference battle for a spot in the NBA Finals. The higher seed maintains home-court advantage.
The winners of the Eastern Conference Finals and Western Conference Finals then face each other in the NBA Finals. This is the championship series, determining the overall NBA champion. Home-court advantage is determined by the team with the better regular season record across both conferences, regardless of seeding. The NBA Finals follow the same best-of-seven format as the previous rounds.
The bracket is “fixed” in the sense that the initial matchups are predetermined based on seeding and remain consistent throughout the playoffs. However, upsets are common, leading to unexpected matchups and making predicting the champion a difficult task. Factors like player injuries, team chemistry, coaching strategies, and even luck can significantly impact the outcome of each series and ultimately the shape of the bracket as the playoffs progress. Therefore, while the structure is set, the results are anything but guaranteed, adding to the excitement and unpredictability of the NBA Playoffs.
